The Foundation Series · On the Ego
Sigmund Freud never wrote the word “ego.” In German, his term was das Ich — “the I.” The Latin id, ego, and superego were coined by his English translator, James Strachey, for the Standard Edition of Freud’s collected works; Das Ich und das Es, published in 1923, became The Ego and the Id in English. The word that named the theory was not, in the end, the theorist’s own.
Nor was the word new when Strachey reached for it. Latin ego had already stood at the center of Western philosophy for three centuries before psychoanalysis existed. Descartes anchored the whole of modern philosophy on it — ego cogito, ergo sum; ego sum, ego existo — in the Meditations of 1641. A century and a half later, Johann Gottlieb Fichte built his entire system on the self-positing Ich, the I that posits itself, the ground of his 1794 Wissenschaftslehre. Kant’s transcendental ego — the synthesizing “I think” that must be capable of accompanying all of one’s representations — belongs to the same lineage. By the time Freud sat down to write, “ego” had been standard philosophical vocabulary in Europe for over a century. He did not introduce the idea to the West. He inherited a word already heavy with use, and his translator matched it, a generation later, to an English philosophical tradition that had been saying “ego” since before Freud was born.
The referent is older still, and it was never confined to philosophy’s seminar rooms. In Sanskrit, ahamkara — “the I-maker” — names the same structure: the operation by which awareness identifies itself as a separate, bounded self. Scholarship traces its earliest appearance to the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (1.2, 1.4) and the Chandogya Upanishad (7.25), among the oldest of the major Upanishads, composed roughly nine hundred to six hundred years before the common era — some twenty-five centuries before Strachey chose his Latin. In its earliest use, ahamkara is read less as a personality trait than as a cosmic operation: the point at which the undivided divides itself into a “someone” set apart from everything else. The concept did not wait for psychology to be born. It is one of psychology’s oldest ancestors.
And it is the oldest story the West tells about itself. In the garden of Genesis, a tree stands “in the midst of the garden” and is named twice before anyone touches it: “the tree of knowledge of good and evil” (Genesis 2:9, 2:17). The prohibition falls on that tree alone. And when the fruit is eaten — “she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat” (3:6) — the immediate consequence is not death. It is sight: “the eyes of them both were opened” (3:7). Knowledge arrives, in the oldest version of the story, as an opening — and what it opens into is two-ness. The knowing of good and evil is the birth of the judged and the judge, the self who did the eating and the self who watches him do it. Read plainly, asking the text to carry no more than it says: this is a civilization’s oldest record of the first cut, long before anyone had a word — Sanskrit, Latin, or German — for what had happened.
Three witnesses, with no line of transmission between them: a Genesis story reaching back before its own authors can be dated, a Sanskrit term rooted in the oldest Upanishads, and a Western philosophical vocabulary running from Descartes through Fichte and Kant to a Viennese doctor’s translator. None borrowed from the others. All three are pointing at the same referent. That recurrence — the same structure surfacing in unrelated soils — is exactly the kind of evidence this publication has argued for before: a pattern that turns up in domains with no causal contact between them is a pattern with a real claim on being more than local.
The First Line
Name the pattern precisely, because precision is what keeps it from becoming a slogan. The first sort this publication has named — before any relationship can be rightly placed — is the cut between the eternal and the temporal, the sacred and the profane: the axis that orients every rung of the ladder above it. The ego is that same cut, performed once more, at a location no metaphysics before or since has fully reckoned with: consciousness itself. Before the ego, there is simply awareness, undivided, no boundary drawn anywhere in it. The ego is the boundary — the line awareness draws around a portion of itself and calls “me,” everything outside the line becoming, by the same stroke, “not-me.” It is the border metapattern applied, for the first time, to the one thing that was never, before that stroke, a territory capable of having a border at all.
And once that first line exists, it does not stay where it was drawn. It recurs — which is the definition of a metapattern, not a figure of speech. The ego’s me and not-me becomes the tribe and the stranger, the believer and the infidel, the citizen and the enemy of the state, at every scale duality tends to organize itself around, down to the smallest unit that ever draws a line: two people, deciding which of them is right.
The physicist Wolfgang Smith gave this same architecture its clearest modern statement, working the problem from the opposite end — not psychology but physics. Smith distinguished horizontal causality, ordinary efficient causation running link to link within a single order, from vertical causality, causation descending from a higher order onto that plane; he built the distinction to account for what quantum mechanics could not explain on its own terms. Smith himself never applied it to ego and soul — what follows is this publication’s own extension of his shape onto that ground, offered as an analogy worth testing, not as a claim Smith made. The ego is horizontal in the strictest sense: it operates inside space and time, one bounded position moving through a sequence, never anything but a further event within the plane it occupies. The soul, on this reading, is vertical — not bound by space and time, not a further position inside the plane the ego moves through but the axis the plane is standing on. Two different causal orders, not two degrees of the same one.
The oldest name for that vertical axis is also, unhelpfully, the most recently repackaged. “As above, so below” did not come down from antiquity in those words; the phrase was compressed into that form by nineteenth- and twentieth-century occultists — Helena Blavatsky used it as an axiom in 1877, and The Kybalion fixed it in 1908 — out of a Latin translation of the Emerald Tablet, whose own earliest known text is an Arabic source from the eighth or ninth century. What the phrase compresses, though, is genuinely old and genuinely independent: the conviction that the celestial order and the earthly order correspond, that above and below are related rather than sealed apart, appears in Greek philosophy from Anaximander onward and in the Vedic Purusha Sukta, among sources with no line of transmission between them. The phrase is young. The referent it carries is not — which makes the phrase itself a small demonstration of the discipline this publication practices: do not mistake the symbol’s age for the referent’s.
Real knowledge has always required both axes held at once, in tension — which is what makes what happened with Descartes worth naming precisely, because the common version of that story is too simple to survive a careful reader. Descartes did not discard the vertical. He was one of philosophy’s most committed dualists, res extensa and res cogitans, and he argued hard for the soul’s reality rather than against it. What he did was build the wall between the two so completely that nothing could cross it: matter reduced to pure extension, stripped of quality and purpose, while the soul sat sealed in a separate substance with no working account of how the two would ever touch — his own answer, a gland at the base of the brain, satisfied no one, least of all careful readers of his own century. He held the tension. He built it too brittle to hold. And a tension that cannot hold does not stay balanced — it collapses toward whichever side is easier to measure, which is exactly what his successors did: kept his mechanized, purely horizontal nature, and quietly dropped the soul-substance as an embarrassment neither Descartes nor anyone after him could make work. Descartes built the trap without meaning to. The Enlightenment materialists who came after him are the ones who walked into it and closed it behind them.
The Ego’s Signature
The pattern is not only ancient. It is present, in this moment, in every mind reading this sentence, and it rarely announces itself as metaphysics. The ego wants to be right — not occasionally, not only under provocation, but as a standing orientation, the way a compass wants north. Being right is the felt confirmation that the boundary drawn around “me” holds; being wrong is a small breach in it, and the ego treats even trivial breaches as though something larger than the fact in question were at stake. The ego wants to be heard — not merely understood, but registered, counted, granted the kind of attention that confirms the boundary is real to someone besides the one who drew it. And the ego wants to control — not from malice but from function: a boundary that cannot secure its own territory is not doing the one job a boundary exists to do. None of this needs a headcount to be true. It needs only a boundary, drawn once, at the beginning of the story — and it describes what any boundary does, wherever one is found, not a verdict on the character of the person carrying it.
The Wrong-Sized Boundary
Abraham Maslow gave this operation its clearest secular map. In “A Theory of Human Motivation” (Psychological Review, 1943), he arranged human need in an ascending order: physiological need first — food, water, shelter; then safety; then love and belonging; then esteem; then self-actualization. At the first two tiers, the ego is not the problem. It is the correct operator. Wanting to eat, wanting shelter, wanting to be secure — this is the boundary doing exactly the work a boundary exists to do, and no discipline of dissolution has any business asking a hungry or endangered person to set it aside.
The turn comes at the third tier. Belonging is not optional and not a weakness — Maslow is precise that it is a genuine need, not a luxury layered on top of the real ones. Maslow does not himself say what happens next; the boundary-algorithm move that follows is this piece’s own extension of his map, not a conclusion he drew. But the ego, still running the only program it has ever run, answers the question of belonging the way it answered the question of survival: draw a boundary, defend it. For most of the species’ history that boundary was the tribe, and the tribe was the right size for the world a person actually lived in — one did not trade, marry, or make war with anyone beyond the range a person’s feet or language could reach, so the boundary and the lived world were the same size. What has changed is not the need for belonging. It is the size of the room. Travel, trade, and communication have made “everyone a person might actually encounter, depend on, or be harmed by” a species-wide category for the first time in the species’ history. Put plainly: the ego is running a boundary algorithm sized for a world of a few hundred people, in a world of eight billion.
This is not an argument for erasing what a boundary of the older kind produced. Culture — the costume, the custom, the cuisine, the local form a people gives to being human in one particular place — is not what is in question, and a shared culture is not the same claim as a closed boundary. A region does not need to stop being itself for the boundary that decides who counts as fully human to widen past it. The case for rootedness deserves its full weight here, and philosophers of identity have made it seriously, not as reflexive parochialism — Charles Taylor’s argument in Sources of the Self (1989) is the clearest version: a self does not float free; it becomes a self only inside frameworks of meaning it did not invent, most of them inherited from a particular people and place. A fair rendering of that case says something real: a person raised inside no particular place, no particular culture, no particular story of their own people is not thereby raised into humanity-in-general — often they are raised into nowhere, attached to nothing, which is its own impoverishment, not a liberation from tribalism. The claim this piece is making is narrower than “dissolve every particular attachment.” It is that belonging as identity and belonging as the boundary of moral concern are two different operations that the ego, left to its default program, keeps welding into one — and it is the welding, not the attachment itself, that an enlarging world can no longer afford.
The Boundary Weaponized
Nowhere does that welding cost more than in war, and here the smaller claim is the only one worth making, because the larger one does not survive its first counter-example. It is not true, and does not need to be true, that the ego is the sole cause of any given war; real, non-metaphysical causes are at work in every conflict the record holds. Geoffrey Blainey’s classic study The Causes of War (1973) remains one of the clearest accounts of what those causes actually are — and his finding cuts against the folk version of “wars are about resources”: examining case after case, he found arms races, resource scarcity, and economic deprivation to be poor predictors on their own, and located the more reliable trigger in rival, often mistaken estimates of relative power. Nations go to war, on his account, when both sides believe they can win; war itself becomes the crude instrument that settles whose estimate was right. A historian working from Blainey’s record can trace most conflicts to that kind of miscalculation without reference to metaphysics at all. But look for the one thing that has to be present before a miscalculation can turn into mass killing, and it is not the miscalculation itself. It is a “them.” The historical record turns up remarkably few wars, at any scale that rises to full mobilization, fought without the ego’s oldest operation performed first at tribal or civilizational scale: drawing the boundary of “us” so that whoever falls outside it — the infidel, the barbarian, the enemy of the people — can be killed without the killing registering, to the one doing it, as killing one of us. Blainey’s miscalculation supplies the trigger — why a war starts where and when it does. The manufactured “them” supplies something the trigger alone cannot: the necessary enabling condition without which the killing does not scale, whatever finally sets it off. And that manufacturing is, almost without exception, done from a podium and not a foxhole — by the powerful, the propagandist, the mythmaker, not by the person handed a rifle and a story about who the enemy is. Accountability for it belongs where it was made, not where it was carried out.
Read the record honestly and this is close to unfalsifiable in a way the larger claim never was: strip the manufactured enemy out of any war and the war does not proceed on schedule; it stalls at the point where enough ordinary people would have to recognize the person across the line as one of their own. The ego did not invent land disputes, and it did not invent miscalculated odds. It invented the operation that makes killing over either one possible.
The Water the Fish Can’t See
Every metapattern named so far — the border, the binary, the cycle, the center and the periphery — is something a trained eye can hold at a distance and examine, the way a geometer holds a circle. The ego is the one metapattern that cannot be examined this way, because it is not an object the eye is looking at. It is the position the eye is looking from. Every other pattern, once seen, stays visible; this one is invisible for the same reason water is invisible to a fish — not because it is hidden, but because it is the medium the looking itself is happening inside of.
Carl Jung arrived, independently, at a version of the discipline this publication has named symbol ≠ referent. He distinguished a sign, which stands for something already known and can be stated plainly, from a symbol, which he held to be the best available expression for something not yet fully knowable — on his account, a symbol reducible without remainder to what it represents was never really a symbol, only a sign wearing its costume. His archetypes follow the same logic: never encountered directly, only ever met through their symbolic expressions in dream, myth, and image. The parallel is worth naming plainly, not for the authority of citing him but because it means the axiom this piece has been building on is not one tradition’s private property. Two lineages that never read each other’s primary texts arrived at the same caution from opposite ends of the world. Both are warning of the same failure, stated once and plainly: the mind mistakes its own representations for the thing represented — and the ego is the mechanism performing that mistake.
Which is what makes the ego dangerous to write about at all, including in a piece like this one. To notice that the ego is the master metapattern is exactly the kind of insight the ego is built to claim as its own achievement — “I see the pattern behind every pattern” is not a humble sentence, however true it may be. The discipline that has to hold here is the one this whole piece has been arguing for: the seeing is not the ego’s accomplishment, because to see the boundary clearly, as a boundary, already begins to loosen the identification with it. A line cannot be fully seen by someone still standing entirely inside it. The moment it becomes visible as a line — drawn, not given, one operation among the mind’s operations rather than the mind itself — it has already stopped being invisible water and started becoming an object like any other, which is the first step of no longer being trapped inside it.
Catching the First Cut
The discipline does not stay theoretical for long, because the ego does not stay theoretical for long — it announces itself in grammar before it ever announces itself in argument. Try, for one day, the plainest test there is: stop saying I did this, I was going there, I think that. Not because the pronoun is guilty — English cannot build most of its sentences without a subject, and no fluency in avoiding the word is itself the discipline. The word is not the target. What the word does, unnoticed, dozens of times an hour, is the target: every I quietly re-draws the boundary this piece has been naming, re-asserts the “me” as the fixed point every sentence orbits. The exercise is not to succeed at avoiding it — that collapses into its own quiet trophy, a new boundary drawn around “the self who doesn’t say self,” the identical operation wearing a more sophisticated disguise. The exercise is to notice the reach for it: the half-second before “I,” where the sentence could have been built another way — the body walked there; a thought arose; the coffee is finishing — and was not, because the ego, running the only program it has ever run, filled the gap first. Catching that half-second, again and again, ten times or a hundred times in a single ordinary day, is not a grammar trick. It is the boundary becoming visible as a boundary — which is already, as the piece has argued, the first stage of no longer being fully inside it.
This is not a discipline invented for this piece. It has already been lived, completely, by at least one documented witness in living memory. Anandamayi Ma (1896–1982), born Nirmala Sundari in Kheora, in what is now Bangladesh, is recorded by her own devotees as never referring to herself in the first person in her adult life. She said this body, or this little child — went to Vrindavan, slept here last night — never I. Her biographers read this not as an affectation adopted for effect but as the plain linguistic fact of a life in which, by every account of those who spent decades near her, the ahamkara that would ordinarily reach for “I” simply did not perform its usual operation. The grammar of her speech is offered here as documented reception — what witnesses recorded, not a claim about her private interior — and it stands as the demonstration that the exercise above is pointing at something real rather than something merely aspirational: a life in which the first cut had, in fact, stopped being made.
The Cure Is the Whole Path
This is why the cure for every division this piece has named — the tribe and the stranger, the believer and the infidel, the citizen and the enemy, the self certain it is right against the self certain it is wronged — is not, in the end, a different set of boundaries better drawn. It is the same cure, at every scale: the loosening of the first boundary, the one drawn around “me,” from which every other boundary borrowed its shape. Heal the first cut and what happens downstream is not new argumentation — the whole edifice comes to belong to something other than what it was built to defend. Me becomes we; we becomes, eventually, the thing it was always secretly standing in for: One. This is not a dissolution of individuality; it is a dissolution of the boundary that mistakes individuality for separateness — not as a slogan and not as a political program, but as the plain result of no longer needing a line to know where one ends. The wave does not stop being water when it stops insisting it is only a wave. Sarvam khalvidam brahma: all this, verily, is Brahman.
It matters here that the ego can survive belief. Belief is something the ego can hold inside itself, one more possession filed beside its opinions and its preferences, costing it nothing to keep. What it cannot survive is surrender, and every tradition that has taken the sacred seriously enough to draw its sharpest line has drawn that line exactly there, not at belief: “ye cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24); “the devils also believe, and tremble” (James 2:19), belief itself put in a demon’s mouth to show it was never the thing that mattered; the Gita’s own final instruction, sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja, abandon all other dharmas and take refuge in this alone (Bhagavad Gita 18.66); even the word Islam, built from the root for submission rather than the root for belief. Four traditions with no line of transmission between them, landing on the same shape: the sacred does not compete for a seat at the table with everything else the ego holds. It refuses the table.
But surrender, however total, is not yet the thing itself, and the distinction matters more than it first appears to. Every one of those instructions still requires two terms to make its sentence work — someone surrendering, and something surrendered to — however absolute the giving-over, the grammar has not changed: a self, an Other, a relation between them. That is duality performing its most serious, most disciplined act, the furthest the two-term structure can reach before it either settles there, permanently, as love, as devotion, as relationship held forever as two — which is not a failure, for traditions that hold it as their own completion — or the intensity of the surrender burns through the very frame that made surrender possible in the first place, subject and object both, and what is left over is not a more devoted relationship.
It is no relationship at all, because there is no longer two to be in one. Nonduality is not a further religion offering a harder surrender to a higher object. It cannot be reached by worship, or belief, or even total submission, because those are the instruments duality has for approaching what still looks, from inside duality, like an Other. They open the door. They are not what is standing on the other side of it.
The war was never between two peoples who could not be reconciled. It was between a boundary and the thing the boundary was drawn across — and the boundary, examined closely enough by the very eye it was drawn to protect, does not so much lose the argument as stop being able to remember what it was defending.

On the Record
Freud never used the word “ego”; he wrote das Ich. The Latin id, ego, and superego were coined by his English translator, James Strachey, for the Standard Edition; Das Ich und das Es (1923) became The Ego and the Id.
Descartes, Meditations on First Philosophy (1641) — “ego sum, ego existo.” Fichte, Wissenschaftslehre (1794) — the self-positing Ich. Kant, the transcendental ego / synthesizing “I think,” Critique of Pure Reason.
Ahamkara traced to the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (1.2, 1.4) and the Chandogya Upanishad (7.25), c. 900–600 BCE, read in earliest use as a cosmic rather than personal operation.
Genesis 2:9, 2:17 (the tree named); 3:6 (the fruit eaten); 3:7 (“the eyes of them both were opened”) — King James Version.
Wolfgang Smith (1930–2024), mathematician and physicist (MIT, UCLA, Oregon State), originated the horizontal/vertical causality distinction in Cosmos and Transcendence (1984) and Physics and Vertical Causation (2019). Its application to ego and soul in this piece is this publication’s own extension of his framework, not a claim Smith made himself.
“As above, so below” was fixed in its familiar wording by Helena Blavatsky (Isis Unveiled, 1877) and The Kybalion (1908), compressing a Latin rendering of the Emerald Tablet, whose earliest known text is Arabic, eighth or ninth century. The underlying correspondence concept is independently old, appearing in Greek philosophy from Anaximander onward and in the Vedic Purusha Sukta (Rigveda 10.90).
Descartes was a committed substance dualist who argued for the soul’s reality, not against it; the standard history-of-philosophy account of his successors mechanizing nature while quietly dropping the soul-substance follows E. A. Burtt, The Metaphysical Foundations of Modern Physical Science (1924), and Whitehead, Science and the Modern World (1925).
Maslow, “A Theory of Human Motivation,” Psychological Review (1943). The boundary-algorithm reading of his third tier is this publication’s own extension of his map, not his own conclusion.
Charles Taylor, Sources of the Self (1989) — selfhood constituted through inherited frameworks of moral meaning, not self-generating.
Geoffrey Blainey, The Causes of War (1973) — his central finding locates the trigger of war in rival, often mistaken estimates of relative power between nations, explicitly weighing against resource scarcity, arms races, and economic deprivation as reliable predictors on their own.
Carl Jung, Psychological Types (Collected Works, Vol. 6), Definitions: a symbol is “the best possible description or formulation of a relatively unknown fact” (para. 814); a sign, by contrast, stands for something already known and statable plainly (para. 815).
Matthew 6:24 and James 2:19, King James Version. Bhagavad Gita 18.66, sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja — the Gita’s closing instruction. Islam from the Arabic root for submission.
Anandamayi Ma (1896–1982), born Nirmala Sundari in Kheora, in what is now Bangladesh. Her lifelong avoidance of the first person is documented by her devotees and biographers, drawn here from this canon’s own 108 Days with Adi Shankara, Volume Three. Offered throughout as documented reception — what witnesses recorded — never as a claim about her private interior.

Every mind reading this sentence is running an operation older than any word for it — Freud called it das Ich, the Upanishads called it ahamkara twenty-five centuries earlier, and Genesis names it without a word at all, in the moment two eyes are opened and see two-ness for the first time. This dispatch traces the ego as a metapattern: the first boundary, drawn once around awareness itself, that then recurs at every scale duality organizes around — tribe and stranger, believer and infidel, the self certain it is right against the self certain it is wronged.
It draws on Wolfgang Smith’s vertical and horizontal causality, Maslow’s hierarchy of need, Jung’s sign-versus-symbol distinction, and Geoffrey Blainey’s actual finding on what starts wars — not resources, but rival, mistaken estimates of power, with the manufactured “them” supplying the permission a miscalculation alone cannot. Every extension past what these sources themselves claimed is named as this publication’s own, not borrowed authority.
It closes with a practice, not just an argument: for one day, catch the half-second before “I” in your own sentences, the reach the ego makes before it’s ever noticed. Anandamayi Ma is offered as documented proof the discipline is livable, not aspirational — a woman who, by every account of those who knew her, never once needed the word.
