I was listening to a brother on Clubhouse explain nonduality. He was sincere, and he was not wrong in what he was pointing at, and I could not stay in the room. Not because he was foolish — because he was reaching. You could hear it in the grammar of his longing: the words kept traveling outward, toward a something, a state to be attained, a knowledge to be established in. And the reaching was the tell. To reach for a thing is to stand apart from it. The more he explained the not-two, the more thoroughly he rebuilt the two — a knower over here with the explanation, a listener over there without it. He was demonstrating, live and unaware, the exact thing his words denied.

That is where this began, and I want to trace how it ends, because the road runs straight and it passes two of the finest minds the West ever produced — both of whom walked nearly the whole way, and stopped, for the same reason, at the same wall.

The Ones Who Almost Got It

Alexander Pope, in the Essay on Man, reached for it. He called God the soul of the world. He opened the possibility that God was not the maker standing outside the chain of being but the last link within it — immanent, the source as the world rather than over against it. Read for the referent, that is very near the razor. He even located the fracture where it belongs: in the seeing, not the thing. Man, blinded by pride, manufactures the discord; the creation itself is seamless. That is avidya named in heroic couplets.

And then he planted his flag on a rung. The frame Pope actually committed to was the Great Chain of Being — a ranked hierarchy in which every creature keeps its ordained place, and man’s whole wisdom is to accept his middle station and not presume to climb. He used the ladder and forbade the ascent. He saw the One in all and then taught submission to one’s slot within it. He kept the symbol of order and never reached the referent that the order was one thing, and that the one scanning and the God scanned were never two.

Spinoza went further — further than any Western mind before the Eastern texts crossed over. One substance, he said, and he would not flinch from it: Deus sive Natura, God or Nature, two words for a single reality of which every person and every thing is a passing mode, a wave of the one sea. The separate self dissolves into it; mind and body are not two things but one thing seen twice. And at the summit of his Ethics stands the strangest, purest line in Western philosophy — that the love with which the mind loves God is the very love with which God loves himself. The lover, the loving, and the loved, collapsed into one. Stated as a theorem. He got there.

But Spinoza’s One is all Being and almost no awakeness. His substance is infinite, necessary, complete — and cold, unfolding by the iron law of its own nature like a boundless mathematics, a God so impersonal it shades toward the mechanical. He proved you are a mode of the One. He could not quite say the One wakes as your own face and knows itself in the waking. He reached the unity as structure and lost the living warmth of it. The Christian kept the person and lost the unity; Spinoza kept the unity and lost the person. Each half of the West, holding one half of the whole.

It Comes Back to the Ego

So why do they stop? Every one of them — the Clubhouse brother, Pope on his rung, Spinoza at his cold summit — stops at the same place, and it is not a failure of intelligence. It is the ego, and the one leap it cannot make: the leap that dissolves the one making it. You can reason all the way to the edge. You cannot reason off it, because the step is not another thought to be held; it is the surrender of the holder. The mind will take you to the last ledge and there it stands, because to go further it would have to stop being the separate thing that has come so far. The final distance is the ego’s own life, and it will defend that life to the end — which is the fool’s errand, and the whole of the matter.

Here is the keystone, the thing under all of it. All knowledge is one concept, and every concept has three properties — the conceptual, the functional, the physical. Which means even the physical pole is a property of a concept. Knowledge never steps outside the medium it is made of. The map goes all the way down. And therefore the separate self — the me that must be defended, the reputation, the life held as a possession — is itself a concept, an object appearing in the very field it imagines it stands outside of. To defend it as though it were a reality is to mistake a symbol for a referent, which is not merely unwise but a category error: you are building a fortress around a word. That is why the defense of one’s life and name is a fool’s errand. There is no object there of the kind the defending assumes.

Even Consciousness Cannot Be Reached For

And now run the razor on the highest thing of all, the one ground a seeker imagines he can finally stand on — consciousness itself. Surely, he thinks, this is the real thing, not a concept but the source; here at last is something to hold. But watch what happens when he reaches. Every concept has its three properties, the conceptual, the functional, the physical — the x, the y, the z. And consciousness has them too. Its functional property, the y, is awareness: consciousness doing its work, registering, lighting the room. Its physical property, the z, is intelligence: consciousness measured and degreed, the reckoning of distance between the self and the other. But awareness is not consciousness, and intelligence is not consciousness, any more than the warmth or the shining is the fire. They are its properties. A property is never the thing.

So the moment the seeker reaches for consciousness and closes his hand, he finds he is holding the y or the z — an awareness he can point to, an intelligence he can measure — and both of these are objects, both are the finger, both are defendable, and neither is the source. The source is the x. And the x cannot be reached for, because it is x-zero, pure x, the conceptual source of which awareness and intelligence are only the properties. It is the seer that cannot be seen — not because it is hidden, but because it is the one doing all the reaching, and the reaching hand can never grasp itself. The instant you have hold of something, you are holding a property; the x has already slipped, being the one who holds. This is the razor at the deepest place it can be laid: even consciousness, sought as an object, is grabbed by its y and z and mistaken for its x. Pure x is the ZERO — the source that was never a thing, and so was never in danger, and so needs no defense at all.

See, then, what every one of them did. Pope reached for the soul of the world and closed his hand on a property. Spinoza reached for substance — for being, the y and z of the One — and got a cold and perfect structure, everything but the living x. The brother on Clubhouse reaches for awareness as a state to be attained and grasps the y, calling the property the source. Each grabbed what could be grabbed and mistook it for what cannot. That is the fool’s errand in its final form: not only defending the self as though it were real, but reaching for consciousness itself as though it were an object — when the x has no y or z to seize, and is only ever the source the properties hang upon.

The Judge Was You

And this is where the oldest symbol of all comes clean. God the Judge — the eye that sees every deed, before whom nothing is hidden, who knows your guilt though you tell no one. The West received that symbol and kept it as an external tribunal, a watcher on a throne keeping the ledger of your life. But read for the referent, up the ladder, and the Judge turns around. There is no watcher set apart from you, auditing from above. There is consciousness itself — the seer that cannot be seen, the witness that is your own nature — and it cannot not know what you have done, because it is the doing, seen from within. Nothing is hidden from it, not because a god is spying, but because there is no outside to hide in. You are the seer you are fleeing.

So the terror of judgment is real, but its object was always misnamed. It is not the fear of a stranger’s eye. It is the ego’s flight from the witness it can never escape, because the witness is what it most deeply is. The Judge is the projected referent of the inner seer — God’s judgment is the SELF, knowing. And the day you stop running from it is the day the judge and the judged are found to have always been one, and the courtroom, which was never anywhere but in the seeing, quietly empties.

Why It Never Has to Fight

Which returns us, at the last, to the brother on Clubhouse and the thing he could not do. In nonduality you never say I am right and you are wrong — and not because you are being gracious. It is that the sentence is a category error. Right and wrong is a relation between claims competing over one object, on one field, inside one game. Dualism makes its move inside that game. Nonduality is the recognition that the field is painted on. They are not two answers to one question; one of them is the seeing that there was no separate question. To answer the dualist in kind — to say yes, I am right — is to step onto his field, accept his category, and become just another player with a position to defend. And a position, the moment it is held as an object, requires defense, and defense installs the two all over again.

So the mature response is not refutation. It is to decline the category. Not I am right, and not the limp we are both right — both are still moves in the game. It is: that question does not apply here; the tools you are handing me were built for a different job and they do not fit this one. You set them down. You do not swing them back. Nonduality wins nothing, because it refuses to be the kind of thing that wins — and that refusal is not weakness but the whole of its strength. It begins and ends in the same place, having never smuggled in a second thing that would need reconciling.

The keystone even holds itself to the standard. If all knowledge is purely conceptual, then this proposition is too — and it does not exempt itself, does not pretend to be a reality to be defended. It is the finger, and it knows it is the finger. It uses concept to show the edge of concept and then falls silent, because to defend it would be the very errand it names. That is the difference between a doctrine and a razor. A doctrine keeps a holder. A razor dissolves him.

Pope saw the One and taught men to keep their rung. Spinoza saw the One and rendered it in ice. The brother on Clubhouse saw it and could not stop describing it, and in the describing kept himself outside it. Each reached the ledge. None took the step, because the step is the one thing the mind cannot perform — the surrender of the one performing. It was always simple. It stays simple. The length, the defense, the reaching, the judgment — all of it is the ego finding somewhere to stand. Set it down, and there is no one left to be right, and no one left to be watched, and nothing left to defend. Only the seeing, which was never two.

Alexander Pope’s An Essay on Man (1733–1734) does call God “the soul of the world” and frames apparent discord in the created order as a defect in human perception rather than in creation — “all partial evil, universal good” — while committing throughout to the Great Chain of Being and to man’s acceptance of his fixed middle station. Both the immanentist glimpse and the hierarchical frame are Pope’s own; the reading of the one against the other is this publication’s interpretation, not a claim about Pope’s stated intent. Baruch Spinoza’s Ethics (published posthumously, 1677) advances the single-substance doctrine (Deus sive Natura, God or Nature) in which all things are modes of one substance, and closes its fifth part on the amor Dei intellectualis — the intellectual love of God — with the proposition that the mind’s love of God is the same love by which God loves himself. The characterisation of that One as structurally “cold” is interpretation, drawn from Spinoza’s own insistence that substance unfolds by necessity of its nature.
