You’ve stated the law in clear and simple terms. It’s high time Canada and the Provinces abided accordingly. We have a long way to go to make amends with our Indigenous peoples.

As an aside, your posts on Substack are a wonderful find find. You cover a wide range of interesting topics, researched well and presented objectively. Love it!

Thank you for this wonderful piece. Having been transferred to Alberta from Montreal after the 1995 referendum, I recall our First Nations in Quebec and their response. Yet despite that Quebec separatists seem to have decided they can try to overlook First Nations in Quebec yet again same as is occurring here. Far too many Premiers seem to have come to believe once elected the province, the land and the people become their personal fiefdom. Nothing is further from the truth. Each provincial Premier is a « caretaker » and responsible for striving to support the citizens until they and their party are voted out of office.

Good article and true to form, on an even keel with respect to events and history and law. The 'shady' part, not detailed (as it's still unfolding) is the propensity of Smith's duplicity. What she says and what she does.

She did not run on a platform of 'separation', regardless her quipping (wordSmithing) about 'united' Canada as she courts the separatists wishes and spends considerable time paving a path for their petitions etc. All this petitioning is her doing and is frankly distracting from what the majority of citizens want and stated they need: proper healthcare funding, proper education funding, protected clean water, etc.

Her personal behaviour is also in question (not that politicians are known for truth telling) but she lies with impunity and on record (think immigrants for example), and while her stance and behaviour may/may not be treasonous, that will be for the courts to once again decide, but her self-righteous response back to the Chiefs (check yourself) in her huffy manner is also telling for an authoritarian caught in her own game!
