THE VERTICAL DISPATCH
We write for the mind, the eye, and the ear.
Read it. Look at it. Listen to it. The Vertical Dispatch is built for all three — prose with rhythm, made to be heard as much as read.
From metaphysics to geopolitics, from culture to history, from the sacred to the street — and everything in between. One lens, every subject. No ego. Just the record, named clean.
Press play. Walk with the word. 🕯️

“The shadow that is not confronted grows darker and denser, until it emerges in ways no one controls.”
— after C. G. Jung
This Series has read the shadow across many faces — in the films that dramatize it, in the Passion that dissolves it, in the leader who has made its indulgence fashionable. This dispatch reads its ending. For the shadow, in Jung’s account, is not merely a darkness a person or a people carries. It is a darkness with a trajectory, a logic, a direction of travel — and the direction is always the same. The shadow disowned does not stay contained. It projects outward, consuming first the ones nearest to it, then the wider circle, then the nation that carries it — and when at last it has run out of others to consume, it turns, with perfect inevitability, upon the one who would not face it. The shadow comes home. It always comes home. The only thing history leaves open is the order of the wreckage.
We do not read a private mind here, and we do not pronounce a man’s fate; that is not ours to author, and the frame does not require it. We read the logic of the shadow itself, which is universal, and the record of history, which is documented, and we ask the reader to hold the pattern against the present and draw their own conclusion. The lesson is the point — not a prophecy, but a law, and a law that binds every one of us in the measure we refuse our own darkness.
The Roster of the Homecoming
History keeps the ledger, and it is remarkably consistent. Consider the figures in whom the unintegrated shadow reached the scale of a state, and consider the order in which the destruction fell — the people first, the host last.
Adolf Hitler. The shadow projected outward onto a scapegoated people, then onto a continent, consuming millions in the camps and tens of millions in the war, and only at the very end, with Berlin in ruins and the nation he claimed to exalt reduced to rubble and occupation, did it turn inward — the pistol in the bunker, the host destroyed last, after the country and the people had already been laid waste. The nation first. Himself at the end.
Benito Mussolini. The strongman who loved the uniform and the grand speech and the image of himself as Italy’s savior, who dragged his nation into a war that killed hundreds of thousands of Italians — the people first — and was at the last captured by his own countrymen while trying to flee, executed, and hung by the feet in a Milan square to be beaten by the crowd he had ruled. The people first. Himself at the end.
Nicolae Ceaușescu. Twenty-four years of a shadow that starved and surveilled and hollowed out Romania — the people first — until the nation rose and, on Christmas Day of 1989, stood him and his wife against a wall. The people first. Himself at the end.
Pol Pot. The ideologue who emptied the cities and worked and starved perhaps two million of his own people to death in the fields — the people first, on a scale almost beyond counting — and who died a hunted fugitive in a jungle hut as the movement he built collapsed around him. The people first. Himself at the end.
The pattern does not vary, and it is the deepest teaching the shadow offers. The darkness never spares the host out of loyalty; it simply reaches him last, because there are always others nearer to hand to destroy first — the deputies, the allies, the neighbours, the citizens, the nation itself. The host is not the shadow’s exception. He is its final course. Everyone around the unintegrated shadow draws the short stick, one after another, in widening circles — and then, when the circle has closed and there is no one left to blame or to burn, it comes home. That is the law. It has no recorded exception at the scale of a state.
The Circle Widening Now
Hold that law against the present, and read only the conduct, which is public. A trade war has been opened against Canada — not a rival, not an adversary, but a neighbour and an ally, a country that has for a century and a half built and defended democracy, that stood at Vimy and on the Normandy beaches and in the long cold vigil after, that has been, by any honest reckoning, one of the most decent and reliable partners any nation ever had. That is the country now being struck: taxed under a dead statute dug out of the last depression, its compliance with a deal the American president himself signed and praised now recast as a crime, an accord declared on a Tuesday and dissolved by a Friday. The neighbour made the enemy. The friend made the threat.
This is the circle widening, in the only terms we are entitled to name — the conduct, the record, the shape of the thing. First the deputies and the allies who drew the short stick, one after another, everyone who came near and showed a shred of independent judgment discarded or savaged. Then the institutions. Now the neighbour — a decent country, attacked not because it is dangerous but, if the shadow’s logic holds, because it is the nearest mirror, and the mirror is unbearable. The circle is doing what the circle always does. It is widening. And the roster of history tells us where a widening circle ends, and in what order.
We name no man’s fate, and we predict no bunker and no square; that would be to author a doom, and the frame forbids it. We say only what the law of the shadow and the ledger of history plainly show: that the unintegrated darkness consumes outward until it has no one left to consume, and then it comes home — and that the question such a pattern always finally poses is not whether the homecoming comes, but in what order the ruin falls. The country first, or the man? History’s answer, every time it has reached this scale, has been the same. The country first. The people first. The host at the end, alone in the wreckage he made, destroyed last by the very darkness he would not turn and face.
The Mirror, As Always
And here the Series turns, as it must, because the shadow it reads is never only another’s. The law that consumes the tyrant is the same law, in smaller measure, that governs every unfaced darkness in every one of us — the resentment nursed, the wound clung to, the enemy manufactured so that we need not look within. The tyrant is only the law written large, at the scale where the whole world can read it. The lesson is not merely his. It is ours. The shadow comes home for everyone who will not meet it — for the nation that cheers the projection, for the follower who needs the enemy named so his own darkness may go unexamined, and yes, for the reader, and for the one who writes these words. The only escape from the homecoming is the one this whole Series has pointed at from the first: to turn, before the circle closes, and meet the darkness while it can still be integrated rather than indulged.
That is the warning, and it is offered as a warning and not a verdict — to the powerful most of all, because they have the most others to destroy before the darkness reaches them, and therefore the longest illusion that it never will. But it always does. It came home for every one of them, in the end, after the people had already paid. Whether it must come home again, and in what order, is not yet written — and the only hand that can still write it otherwise is the one that would turn, now, and face what it has refused. The shadow can be integrated. That is the whole hope of this Series. But it cannot be outrun, and it cannot be fed into silence, and it will not, ever, spare the house that fed it. It comes home. Let each of us meet ours while there is still time to do anything but be consumed by it.

On the Record
Jung’s account of the shadow — that the darkness disowned is projected outward and, unconfronted, grows and emerges destructively — is drawn from his published writings. The historical figures are matters of documented record: Adolf Hitler died by suicide in his Berlin bunker on April 30, 1945, after the war and the Holocaust had devastated Europe and Germany; Benito Mussolini was captured and executed by Italian partisans on April 28, 1945, and his body displayed in Milan, after Italy’s wartime ruin; Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu were executed after a popular uprising on December 25, 1989, following decades of repression in Romania; Pol Pot died in 1998 as a fugitive, after the Khmer Rouge caused the deaths of an estimated one to two million Cambodians. The trade action against Canada (50% tariffs under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, imposed after the collapse of negotiations on August 21, 2026) is drawn from the public record as of the date of writing. Canada’s record as a democratic ally spans, among much else, its service in both World Wars. This dispatch reads the logic of the shadow and the pattern of history; it makes no prediction regarding, and no assertion regarding the private mind, mental state, or fate of, any living individual. All characterizations are interpretation and commentary offered for reflection and public-interest discussion. Verify against primary sources before republication. It has certainly been interesting to watch this stuff play out in real time. Now trade talks are off, we will likely watch more movement of the shadows. It is the silence I will be watching most closely. 🙏
