There is a word for the deepest question a mind can ask, and the word is ontology. It means, simply, the account of what is — the attempt to say what fundamentally exists, what the world is made of underneath its appearances, what is really there when everything provisional has been stripped away. Every philosophy has one. Every religion rests on one. Every serious spiritual teaching, however practical it sounds, carries an ontology under it like a keel under a hull, and the character of the whole vessel is decided by the shape of that keel. So it is worth saying plainly, in this companion to our charter, what ontology this publication holds — because the honest and surprising answer is that it holds none, and the refusal is not evasion. It is the whole method.
That will sound like a dodge, so let me make it a claim instead. We do not offer an account of what is. We offer an account of how to move — the rules by which a self travels from one condition to another, from fragmentation to wholeness to the source. That is not an ontology. It is a grammar. And the difference between the two is the difference between a stone you must defend and a road you may walk, between an idol and an instrument, between the thing and the way. This dispatch is about that difference, because once you see it, you see why nearly every account of ultimate reality eventually calcifies into something its holders must guard with their lives — and why ours, by design, cannot.
What an Ontology Does, and What It Costs
An ontology answers the question what is. It says: reality is made of matter; or reality is made of mind; or reality is made of God; or reality is a substrate of energy through which a mechanism runs; or reality is a field of information. Each of these is a claim about the furniture of existence, about what is really there. And each is, in its own domain, powerful — an ontology organizes a world, tells you what matters, gives the mind a floor to stand on. We are not against the making of them. The whole scientific enterprise is the disciplined refinement of an ontology, and it has remade the world.
But an ontology has a cost, and the cost is structural, not incidental. The moment you say what is, you have made a thing — and a thing can be possessed, and what can be possessed can be defended, and what is defended becomes, in time, the very idol that stands between the holder and the reality it was meant to describe. This is not a failure of bad ontologies only. It is the fate of all of them. The map, drawn well enough and held long enough, is mistaken for the territory; the account of the thing is taken for the thing; and the mind that set out to know reality ends by defending its picture of reality against all comers, which is a different activity altogether, and often the opposite one. An ontology is a claim, and a claim draws a border, and a border makes an inside and an outside, and now there is something to protect. That is how the account of the sacred becomes the sacred war.
You can watch this happen to the highest teachings. A luminous insight into the nature of things is set down in words; the words are true to the insight; and then the words harden into doctrine, the doctrine into dogma, the dogma into the marker of a tribe — and people who have never once had the insight will kill and die for the words that were only ever its shadow. The ontology, which began as a finger pointing at the moon, becomes a flag. This is the deepest reason our charter speaks of tribal idols and of stripping them away. The idol is rarely a statue anymore. It is far more often an ontology — a cherished account of what is, worn smooth by the tribe until the living reality it named can no longer be seen through it.
And it is not only the great creeds that do this. Watch it in the small rooms too. A person builds an account of who they are — I am the one who was wronged, I am the strong one, I am the seeker, I am the one who has understood — and that account, an ontology of the self, becomes a thing to defend against every fact that would soften it. The wound must stay a wound, because the whole identity is built on it. The enemy must stay the enemy, because the self that opposes him is made of the opposition. This is the ontology-trap at the scale of a single life, and it is the same trap as the sacred war, only quieter. To say what I am is to make a thing of myself, and a thing must be guarded, and the guarding is the whole of the suffering. The first idol anyone ever builds is the account of their own existence — and it is the last one to fall.
The Traditions That Refused to Answer
Here is what turned the key for us: the deepest traditions saw this trap, and their response was not a better ontology. It was the refusal of ontology altogether — a disciplined, deliberate declining to say what is, because they had understood that any what is would become a thing, and the reality they pointed at was not a thing. Consider the oldest formula of the Upanishads for the ultimate: neti neti, not this, not this. Every time the mind offers a description of the source — it is this, it is that, it is being, it is light — the formula answers, not this, not this, refusing each account in turn, not because the source is nothing but because it is not a thing that any what is could capture. The teaching does not hand you an ontology of the absolute. It takes every ontology of the absolute away from you, one by one, until the mind that was grasping finally opens its hand.
The same refusal runs through the heart of the Buddhist analysis, in the teaching of emptiness — and it goes further than most who quote it realize, because the emptiness is said to be empty of itself. It is not that reality is made of emptiness, as though emptiness were the true substrate at last, the final thing under all the apparent things. That would be one more ontology, the subtlest and most dangerous of all, because it would wear the robes of the ultimate. The teaching forbids exactly that move. Emptiness empties even emptiness; there is no floor of what is to reach, no final furniture, no substrate to grasp and defend. And this is not nihilism, not the claim that nothing exists — it is the claim that no thing exists in the way the grasping mind needs it to, fixed and self-standing and possessable. The reality is not a thing to be known. It is a groundlessness to be released into.
This is the lineage we stand in, and it is why we hold no ontology. Not because we have not thought hard enough to form one, but because the ones who thought hardest formed none on purpose. To answer what is at the summit is already to have missed it, because the summit is precisely what no what is can hold. The sourceless source, the ZERO, the not-two — these are not our ontology, our account of the ultimate furniture. They are edge-words, pointing gestures, the mind’s last sounds before it falls silent, and to mistake them for an ontology would be to build the very idol this whole publication exists to clear.
Why a Grammar Sets the Walker Free
So what is left, if you refuse to say what is? What is left is how to move. And that is what a grammar gives. A grammar does not tell you what the world is made of; it tells you the rules by which one thing becomes another — the moves, the transformations, the sequence of a journey. Our whole method is a grammar in exactly this sense. Deconstruct, construct, dissolve is not a claim about reality; it is a description of a movement a self can make. The small self, the Self, the SELF is not an inventory of three things that exist; it is the grammar of a single ascent, the same reality named at three altitudes of surrender. We do not say what you are. We say how you move from taking yourself to be the one to being dissolved into the other. The verb is the ground, as we have always held. Not the noun. Not the thing. The movement.
And this is why a grammar sets the walker free where an ontology binds him. You cannot defend a grammar as a tribe defends a doctrine, because a grammar makes no claim about what is that an outsider could contradict. It does not say your reality is false and mine is true. It says: here is a road, and here is how the road is walked, and whether you set out from the Cross or the Upanishad or the bare ground of your own suffering, the moves are the same moves. A grammar has no inside and no outside, no border to guard, no heretics, because it is not asserting a world — it is offering a way to travel one. It cannot become the sacred war, because there is nothing in it to possess. You cannot own a verb the way you own a thing. You can only conjugate it, or fail to.
This is the freedom our charter was built on, though we had not yet named the mechanism until now. When we re-read the Cross through nondual eyes, we are not telling the Christian that his ontology is wrong and the Vedic one right — that would be to fight one idol with another. We are showing that the same grammar of dissolution runs beneath both accounts, that the vertical piercing the horizontal and the Self dissolving into the SELF are the same move described from two faces of one mountain. The grammar underlies the ontologies without competing with any of them. It does not ask the reader to leave his tradition. It shows him the movement his tradition was always describing, in whatever furniture his tradition happened to use to describe it. That is why it is universal — not because it is a bigger ontology that swallows the others, but because it is not an ontology at all, and so has no quarrel with any of them.
The Last Guard
And now the hardest thing, the guard we must set on ourselves, because the trap does not spare the one who names it. A grammar, too, can be made into an idol. The moment we hold our triad, our two metaphysics, our careful case of a letter as a possession — as the system, the unique thing we built, the account that makes us right and the others incomplete — we have done the very thing we diagnosed. We will have turned a grammar back into an ontology, a way back into a thing, an instrument back into a flag. The clever refusal of idols is itself the subtlest idol, the one that looks most like wisdom, and it catches the teacher more surely than the student. There is no formula that immunizes against this. There is only the standing discipline of holding the method as a raft and not a relic — the map that carries the reader across and is set down at the shore, along with the one who read it.
For the grammar, too, dissolves. It must, or it becomes the last thing standing between the walker and the summit — a beautiful, intricate, hard-won stone, mistaken for the ground. At the ZERO there is no triad, no method, no Sacred Metaphysics, no charter and no author of one. The grammar is construction, the finest construction, the vessel that carries — and like every construction in our method, its final office is to be surrendered. We build it in order to hand it over, and we hand it over in order that it be, at the last, let go. The way is not the destination. The finger is not the moon. And the account of how to move is not the stillness that all moving was for.
So we hold no ontology, and we guard even our grammar from becoming one. What we offer is a road, honestly named, that any traveler may walk from wherever they stand — and the road’s own end is the point where the road, and the map of it, and the one who walked it, all quietly disappear into what was never a thing to begin with, and never needed to be. That is not evasion. It is the most precise thing language can do at the edge of what language cannot hold. We do not tell you what is. We show you how to move — and then how, at the last, to stop moving, and be.

The formula neti neti (“not this, not this”) is drawn from the Upanishads, notably the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, as the classic apophatic (via negativa) approach to the absolute.
