We assume we see the world as it is. We do not. We perceive a “User Interface” of symbols that represents reality. You do not see “Justice”; you see a gavel (Symbol). You do not see “Value”; you see a dollar sign (Symbol).

The fundamental crisis of modern civilization is not a lack of data. It is the severance of the Connection between the Symbol and the Reality. We are drowning in Horizontal Noise because we have traded the gold standard of “Knowledge” for the fiat currency of “Belief.”

PART I: THE SEMIOTIC TRIANGLE ($→ y → z$)

The Code Structure

To understand the mechanism of intelligence, we must examine the Semiotic Triangle. In the Universal Dynamics framework, this maps directly to our core variables:

The Symbol ($x$): The code, word, or image (e.g., the phrase “The Land of Milk and Honey”).
The Reference ($y$): The precise concept or dictionary definition (e.g., A geographic location characterized by agricultural abundance).
The Referent ($z$): The actual, physical object in reality (The physical Land of Canaan; the actual taste of milk and honey).

The Vertical Law:

In a healthy, syntropic system, the sequence is unbroken: $x→ y → z$. The Symbol triggers the Definition, which guides you to the Reality.

The Glitch (Entropy):

In a corrupted system, the link is severed. You can chant the Symbol “Land of Milk and Honey” ($x$), and define it perfectly as “Abundance” ($y$). But if you are standing in a desert, there is no Referent ($z$). You cannot eat the Symbol. You can only eat the Referent.

PART II: THE TYRANNY OF WORDS

The “Blab-Blab” Trap

In 1938, semanticist Stuart Chase identified that we constantly trade in high-level abstractions—words like “Liberty,” “Fascism,” or “The Economy”—without ever verifying the Referent ($z$). Chase argued that if a word ($x$) has no discoverable referent ($z$), it is merely noise. He called it “blab-blab.”

When you argue about a dog, you can point to the dog ($z$). When you argue about “Democracy” without a shared referent, you are not debating reality; you are fighting over ghosts. We are trading in currency that is no longer backed by the gold of reality.¹

PART III: THE JAQUES AXIOM

The Definition of Knowledge

If symbols without referents are noise, what is Knowledge? Elliott Jaques, in Requisite Organization, provides the engineering standard: “All knowledge is verbally articulated and held in memory. If you can’t state something, you do not know it.”

This is the output filter. You cannot claim to “know” a strategy simply because you feel it. You must be able to encode the Referent ($z$) into a precise Symbol ($x$). If it cannot be articulated, it is not Knowledge; it is merely vague intuition or a skill.

POSTSCRIPT: THE JUNG AXIOM

The End of Belief

This framework leads to the ultimate rejection of the word “Belief.” In his famous 1959 interview, Carl Jung was asked if he believed in God.² He did not say “Yes.” He replied: “I don’t need to believe. I know.”

This is the Vertical Standard.

Belief is standing in the desert holding a map ($x$) that says “Milk and Honey,” hoping the land exists.
Knowledge is standing in the land and tasting the food ($z$).

The Directive: Delete “Belief” from your operating system. Replace it with Proposition (requires logic) or Knowledge (requires experience). Do not be a believer. Be a Knower.
