What you have just named is the climb itself. You are not used to Eastern philosophy being connected to Western thought because the academy in this country has spent a century keeping the two traditions in separate rooms. Substrate is the right word and you are right to feel it taking hold. It is what Plato meant by being, what Aristotle meant by first cause, what Eckhart meant by the ground, what Spinoza meant by substance, what Schopenhauer meant by will, what Heidegger meant by being-itself. The Vedantic tradition names the same thing as Brahman. The substrate is the substrate. The traditions are different vocabularies pointing at it.
