There is a book on my shelf called No Contest: The Case Against Competition. Alfie Kohn wrote it in 1986. My mentor, Michael Hargest, put it in my hands — the way a good teacher gives you a book one at a time, knowing which one you are ready for. Michael is gone now, and I find myself wishing he could read what I am writing, because so much of it began in the books he chose for me. I hope the work honours him. This piece is one way of saying that it does.
Kohn’s argument is simple and, once seen, hard to unsee. Competition is not merely sometimes excessive; it is destructive at its root, in all its forms, because at its heart lies a single structure: an arrangement in which one person can succeed only at the price of another’s failure. Win and lose, bound together, so that my good requires your defeat. He marshals decades of research — from education, sport, the workplace, the performing arts — and finds the results consistent and surprising: competition tends to produce less creativity, poorer performance, and less satisfaction than cooperation does. Even what we fondly call “healthy competition,” he argues, is a contradiction in terms.
Most readers take this as social science, or as politics. I want to read it as something deeper, because I think Kohn walked further up the mountain than he knew, and stopped, as the finest minds tend to, one step below the summit.
Competition is the doctrine of the two
Strip competition down to its bones and look at what it actually asserts. It says: your good and my good are opposed. It says there is not enough — of winning, of worth, of place — to go around, and so we must be set against each other to see who gets it. That is a metaphysics before it is ever an economy. It is the belief in separate, opposed selves, hardened into a structure and then built into a school, a market, a courtroom, a game. Competition is duality wearing a uniform. It takes the oldest error — that you and I are finally two, strangers whose interests must collide — and makes it the organising principle of a civilisation.
And this is why Kohn’s evidence comes out the way it does, though he never quite says so. Cooperation performs better — more creativity, better work, more satisfaction — not because it is a cleverer tactic, but because it is behaviour that has stopped lying about what we are. To cooperate is to act as one. And we perform better acting as one for the plainest possible reason: one is what we actually are. The separation that competition assumes was never true, and arrangements founded on an untruth carry the cost of it, quietly, everywhere. The data is only the visible fruit of an invisible fact. His research is the measurable echo — the physical proof, if you like — of a thing that was never physical to begin with: that the many are not many at the root, and a world ordered as though they were will always ache in ways it cannot name.

What they teach at five
Here is the part that has stayed with me since Michael gave me the book, and the part I think holds its whole heart. Consider what we teach a child at five years old. Share. Take turns. Help the one who fell. We are all in this together. Don’t leave anyone out. That is the curriculum of kindergarten, and notice — it is the referent itself, spoken plainly to someone who has not yet been trained out of hearing it. A five-year-old is told the truth: that another child’s good is not your enemy, that to act as one is simply how things are meant to go.
And then every grade that follows sets to work unteaching it. Rank them. Grade on a curve, so that one child’s rise requires another’s fall. Sort them into the gifted and the rest. Hang the prize where only one can reach it. Teach them, slowly and thoroughly, that the classmate beside them is the obstacle between them and the reward — that another’s success is their own failure. By the end of it we have manufactured, in a person who arrived already knowing better, the very belief in separation the culture will then spend his adult life either profiting from or grieving. We tell the truth once, to the youngest among us, and then devote twelve years to its careful reversal. If you wanted a picture of how a civilisation installs the illusion of the two over a soul that came in knowing the one, you could not draw a clearer one than a school.
Where he stops, and why it is no dishonour
Kohn’s case is empirical and ethical, and it is a very good one. He proves that cooperation works and competition harms — the function and the fruit, what can be measured and weighed. What he does not quite do is reach the root beneath the fruit: not merely that cooperation works, but why — which is that separation is not the truth of what we are, and cooperation is only the behaviour of a people who have stopped pretending otherwise. He argues we should act as one because it produces better outcomes and less suffering. He stops just short of saying we act as one because we are one, and that this is not a strategy at all but a fact, behaving.
I say this not to diminish him — the opposite. He is a genuine witness, pointing up. He reached the truth on the plane where he worked, the plane of how we live and learn and labour together, and he named it there with courage and with evidence, against a culture that calls competition human nature and cannot imagine otherwise. That he did not carry it up to its metaphysical source is no failure of his; it was not the mountain he set out to climb. But for a reader who has been higher, his book reads like the near-summit view. He has the thing in his hands as a social fact. He is one recognition away from turning it over and finding, on its underside, the oldest teaching there is: that there is no other to compete with, because the other is yourself.
And perhaps that is exactly why a book like his must be met by a work like this one — not to correct him, but to complete the sentence he left beautifully unfinished. He showed that the win/lose world produces losers even of its winners. The reason is the one thing his method could not reach: you cannot finally win against another, because there is no finally-other to win against. Every contest is the one Self, briefly forgetting itself, and arranging a room so that it may struggle against its own face.

Michael gave me this book because he saw, I think, where it pointed and trusted me to follow the line past its last page. I have tried to. Kohn made the case against competition from the schoolyard and the office, and it is unanswerable on its own ground. I only add the ground beneath his ground: that cooperation is not the better policy but the truer one, that to share is not a nicer strategy but the first thing we knew and the last thing we forget, and that the five-year-old told to help the child who fell was, for one unguarded moment, the wisest teacher in the building. The rest of our education is the long road back to what she already knew. This is my thanks to the man who set me on the road home. I hope, somewhere, he is reading.

As a nurse in Emergency cooperation was the flow. If we all worked for the common goals of every patient, then we all found success. Team meant overlapping ownership of care, to the benefit of all.

This is the essence of what we promote & teach in construction - a highly 'competitive' business - yet when everyone cooperates from design through to handover at construction end the results are many times more beneficial in earrings and schedule and frequently in creating on-going collaborative relationships.
